Lent 35–A Savior who is with us in the midst of doubt

We don’t often think of doubt as being a key ingredient of our faith.  And, yet it plays an important role.  Yet, equally as important is to know that those times of doubt do not lessen God’s love for you.  He has given to us a Son and Savior who has overcome all things so that we may know “that nothing can separate us form the love of God”.  And, nothing means nothing–even doubt.

This song is by Tommy Walker and it is called “He Knows My Name”.  It is a beautiful way of remembering that in the midst of our doubt, uncertainty, anxiety, and any host of other matters that we have a Savior who stands with us and actually knows our name.  He knows us!  Reflect on what that means for you today as you listen to this song.  God’s peace be with all of you as we begin Holy Week!

Lent 34–All things are made new

Our lives of faith are marked by many moments of disappointment, doubt, and sorrow.  We can identify with the disciples on their walk to Emmaus.  We know the disappointment that they experienced that first Good Friday.  The disappointment that leads us to think we and those around us have failed.  But, Jesus continually meets us in the midst of those disappointments, heartaches, and sufferings, and he doesn’t let us stay there.  Thanks be to God.  The God of new life.  The God of grace.  The God who loves us!

The following song is a classic that is redone by Jars of Clay called “I’ll Fly Away”.  So, what in the world does this song about dying one day have to do with failure.  Martin Luther would talk about two kinds of death.  There is Death with a big “D” and that believe it or not are the failures, disappoints, heartaches we see on a daily basis.  Then he would talk about death with a small “d”.  This was the actual physical death of the body.  For Luther Christ’s death and resurrection had much more to do with daily life than we actually see.  In Christ’s hands all of our failures and disappoints do not have the last word.  We begin again new each day.  Because of Christ we literally fly away from all that holds us back and enter into a new future everyday.  What is it that you need to “fly away” from today.  Know that because of what Christ has done for you, you can.

Lent 32–Look back to see ahead!

Look back to see ahead?!?!?!  What kind of directions are those?  But, if we pause to look back at the many ways God has been with us in life, even when we did not see him at the time, it causes us to take heart.  We begin to realize more and more that Jesus is with us every step of the way.  So, if we can see him in the past, it makes him easier to identify in the present and in the future.  Much like when you tell someone about a person that they believe they haven’t met.  They usually go to such and such a place.  They are about 6 feet tall.  They have brown hair.  “Oh, yeah,” the person replies, “I have seen them many times”.  So, the next time they see that person they will know who it is.  So, look back to see ahead!

Christ is the one who journey’s with us.  He is with us and it is Christ who transforms our weakness and doubts and sufferings into strength, belief, and hope.  He does this over and over again.  It is an amazing love that will not let us go.  Listen to this song by the Sidewalk Prophets–“You Love me Anyway”.  Take all your fears and doubts and bring them to Christ knowing that he loves you anyway and gives you his love and grace always!
